Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains what information Smara (“we”) collects when you use the Service, how we use it, and the choices you have. We aim to collect only what we need to run a study app you can trust.
Information we collect
- Account information — your name and email address, and a password (if you sign up with email) or a Google account identifier (if you sign in with Google). Passwords are stored only as salted hashes.
- Your study content — the PDFs and files you upload and the decks, cards, quizzes, exams, and review history you create.
- Usage data — anonymous, aggregated product analytics about how the app is used (for example, which features are opened and how a study session progresses), so we can improve the Service.
- Billing data — if you subscribe, our payment processor collects your payment details. We never receive or store your full card number.
How we use your information
- to provide the Service — generate, store, and serve your study materials;
- to authenticate you and keep your account secure;
- to process subscriptions and prevent abuse;
- to understand usage in aggregate and improve the product;
- to send you essential account emails (for example, password resets) and, if you opt in, study reminders.
We do not sell your personal information.
Service providers we share data with
We use trusted third parties to run the Service. They process data only to provide their service to us:
- Amazon Web Services — hosts our backend and stores your uploaded files; its AI service (Amazon Bedrock) generates your flashcards, quizzes, and exams from the material you provide.
- Cloudflare — serves the web application and its database, and sends transactional email.
- Stripe — processes subscription payments.
- PostHog — provides product analytics.
- Google — provides optional “Sign in with Google” authentication.
We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights, safety, and security of Smara and its users.
Cookies and local storage
We use browser storage and cookies that are necessary to keep you signed in and to make offline study work. We do not use third-party advertising cookies. Our analytics uses privacy-friendly settings and does not require a consent banner.
Data retention
We keep your account and study content for as long as your account is active. When you delete content, it is removed from the Service; residual copies may persist briefly in backups before being overwritten. You can delete individual decks and files at any time, or contact us to delete your account and associated data.
Your choices and rights
You can access and edit your content in the app, export your decks, and delete material you no longer want. Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete your personal data, or to object to certain processing. To exercise these rights, email support@smara.us.
Children
Smara is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected in the date above and, where appropriate, communicated to you.
