A Knowt alternative for when the exam is the point
Knowt made a name as the free way to turn notes into flashcards, and it does that genuinely well. Smara overlaps on the flashcard layer but is built around a different goal: walking into an exam having already sat one like it.
Where the two tools part ways
Both turn uploaded notes into flashcards. The difference is what happens after. Smara treats cards as one layer of exam prep: the same upload also produces quizzes and a full sectioned practice exam with multi-part case studies, written in the style of any example questions you give it. Every question carries a worked answer key that explains why each wrong option is wrong, and missed questions become flashcards in one click.
Scheduling runs deeper too. Reviews use real spaced repetition: SM-2 by default, FSRS as a setting, with honest four-level grading and interval previews on every button. Studying in Smara is free and unlimited, permanently. You pay only if you want more AI generation than the free allowance.

Moving your cards over
Export your sets from Knowt as CSV and import them directly. They join the same review schedule as everything Smara generates. Anki decks round-trip as .apkg too, in both directions.
When Knowt is the better fit
If free note-to-flashcard conversion is all you need, or your workflow centers on lecture videos and class notes rather than a looming exam, Knowt covers that ground well. Smara is for the weeks where a specific exam is coming and you want practice shaped like it.
